10.20 – 10.50 LNG fuel as an alternative to low-sulphur marine gas oil for complying with the new emission rules

  • Ships can meet the IMO 2020 requirement by using alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas as when ignited it leads to negligible sulphur oxide emissions.
  • Given the development of bunkering infrastructure (part of a wider interest in projects sitting under the umbrella of ‘small scale’ LNG) and the acceleration of the environmental agenda, the number of LNG capable vessels on the orderbook and in the fleet looks likely to continue rising in the short to medium term.
  • Uncertainty remains over to what extent LNG represents a longer-term solution.
